WordPress, which powers this blog among thousands of others, is an excellent tool. However many excellent tools will come to nothing without the community to move them forward. ‘Wordcamps‘ are an example of the community that sets WordPress apart from other tools.
The first Wordcamp in Victoria happened this week (Nov 14th) at University Canada West, who provided the facility. While Victoria is dominated by large public sector business and related conferences the WordCamp, BarCamp, FooCamp-style events have been rare. While there are many attendees from the public-sector the atmosphere is really driven by the small businesses and independent bloggers.
Having attended many Northern Voice conferences I’m hoping this event, or an evolution of it, can grown into a local version of a blogger/social media conference that can help re-inject that independent energy into the online and face-to-face community of Victoria.
